Guy Cottam died on 7th December 2025 two days before his 93rd birthday. He was an enthusiastic member and served on the committee of the SCA for many years. He and his wife Sue were regular attenders at the Annual Conference from the first that was held in York in the late 1980s.
Before specialising in contractual matters and dispute resolution, Guy was a director of an international civil engineering contractor involved in projects in Sudan, Jordan, Iraq, Iran and many other overseas countries. Later, Guy was a busy Expert Witness before developing his practice as Arbitrator, Mediator and Conciliator.
He served as Secretary and Deputy Chairman of The Academy of Experts and was involved in the Academy’s training courses.
He was a Chartered Civil Engineer and was very active in the Institution of Civil Engineers, serving on Council, chairing the Arbitration Advisory Panel, the Conciliation and Adjudication Advisory Panel and the Advisory Panel on Legal Affairs also serving as a member of many other ICE committees.
Guy was involved in the creation of the ICE Training Courses for Adjudicators and Conciliators and also tutored for the CIArb, CIOB, and TeCSA.
Guy was also for a time the legal correspondent for Construction News.
