Neil Kaplan KC

Neil Kaplan CBE KC SBS has practised as a full-time arbitrator since 1995 and has acted as chair, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator in several hundred commercial, infrastructure and investment treaty disputes. His appointments have included arbitrations under the ICC, HKIAC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, SIAC, SCC, ICSID and CIETAC Rules, as well as ad hoc and PCA-administered proceedings.
Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1965, Neil has practised as a barrister, served as Principal Crown Counsel in the Hong Kong Attorney General’s Chambers and as Queen’s Counsel in Hong Kong, and was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong, where he was responsible for the Construction and Arbitration List.
Neil chaired the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre from 1991 to 2004 and served as President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 1999–2000. He has also served in senior roles with ICCA, the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry Arbitration and Mediation Centre, Delos Dispute Resolution and the Bahrain Court of Cassation.
In recognition of his contribution to international arbitration, Neil was appointed CBE in 2001 and awarded Hong Kong’s Silver Bauhinia Star in 2007. He is frequently described as “the father of Hong Kong arbitration”.
Neil is also the author of numerous books and articles, including 'So Now You Are an Arbitrator: The Arbitrator’s Toolkit'.
