About the Society

Foundation and Objects

The Society of Construction Arbitrators was founded in 1983.

The principal object of the Society is to lay down and secure the maintenance of standards to be observed by members in connection with their work as arbitrators or other tribunal members in disputes in the Construction Industry. It also has a number of other objectives which are set out in detail in the Rules of the Society.

Membership

Membership is by invitation only.

Following revision of its Rules in 2016, the Society has three grades of Member:

    • solicitors or barristers or other individuals who do not as a general rule practice as construction arbitrators or adjudicators but do devote a substantial amount of their time to arbitrations or are substantially involved in adjudication, conciliation, mediation, or as dispute board member or other tribunal in disputes in the Construction Industry;
    • for representatives of companies or organisations connected with the Construction Industry who wish to support the objects of the Society; and
    • for those who would qualify as either Member or Supporting member, but are citizens of and/or who reside and practise in countries other than the United Kingdom.
