About the Society
Foundation and Objects
The Society of Construction Arbitrators was founded in 1983.
The principal object of the Society is to lay down and secure the maintenance of standards to be observed by members in connection with their work as arbitrators or other tribunal members in disputes in the Construction Industry. It also has a number of other objectives which are set out in detail in the Rules of the Society.
Membership
Membership is by invitation only.
The Society has four grades of Member:
- Arbitrator Member, which is the principal grade, is restricted to those that have been and are substantially engaged as arbitrator, sole or joint, in disputes in the Construction Industry.
- Supporting Member, for solicitors or barristers or other individuals who do not as a general rule practice as construction arbitrators but do devote a substantial part of their time to arbitrations or are substantially engaged as adjudicator, conciliator, mediator, dispute board member of other tribunal in disputes in the Construction Industry.
- Affiliated Member, for representatives of companies or organisations connected with the Construction Industry who wish to support the objects of the Society.
- Overseas Member, for those who would qualify as either Arbitrator or Supporting Member, but are citizens of and/or who reside and practise in countries other than the United Kingdom.
The Society also has a class of Retired Member.
The Members are qualified Architects, Surveyors, Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, M&E Services Engineers, Building Contractors and Lawyers. The majority of Arbitrator Members are listed in the Register of Experienced Practising Arbitrators held by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
